Magazine Final Project

During the Golden Age of Hip-Hop in the mid-90’s, the Bay Area rap scene was thriving with creativity. Originality was evident within Bay Area rap music and artists were capitalizing on successful money deals offered by major record labels. This era helped launch the careers of acts such as E-40, Too Short, and late Tupac Shakur. Classic material and ingenuity was prominent within Bay Area music and success was indisputable when surveying the record charts. Unfortunately for Bay Area artists, success faded toward the beginning of the new millennium and sales became lackluster remnants of the past. The Bay Area rap scene had been forgotten. Today, the Bay Area is in search of a new star that contains the creativity and originality that once made the Northern California rap music scene a triumphant and lucrative market. The Jacka looks to take his place at the top of the vacant Bay Area throne.

The Jacka originated from the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, California. The young rapper separates himself from the conventional sound of the Bay Area streets, with soulful samples in production, originality in lyrics, and raw talent and hustle. Yet to acquire a record deal, The Jacka is one of the most sought after artists on the West Coast. Prosperous in the independent record market, The Jacka has released several albums in the past years and has developed a strong following in the underground rap scene. His first album, self-titled, The Jacka was released in 2002 and pushed over 25,000 units independently. His second album The Jack Artist was released in 2005 only selling 15,000 units independently due to weak promotion and small financial backing.

In dire need of a new star, the Bay Area rap scene has labeled The Jacka as one of the few artists that will bring the West Coast back to the forefront of rap music. Showcasing creativity, consistency, and distinct sound, The Jacka is ready to drop a classic album with hopes of mainstream success. The rappers third album Tear Gas is one of the most anticipated albums in the Bay Area and is set to be released early next year. The first single from the album, All Over Me is receiving nationwide radio airplay support, building more anticipation for the rapper’s biggest project to date. Tear Gas will include appearances from local Bay Area rappers as well as mainstream artists from around the nation.

With pressure building from fans and record labels, the Jacka looks to not disappoint. A major record label deal is in The Jacka’s near future, but the rapper promises not to lose his originality and sound that made him the artist he is today. With his momentum continuing to build and an organization of Bay Area rappers supporting him, The Jacka is ready to take over 2009 and claim his spot on the top of the Bay Area rap scene. In addition to the Bay Area, The Jacka looks to take his music worldwide sticking to his formula of originality and strong work ethic. With appearances on collaboration albums, mixtape releases, and concert appearances, The Jacka remains one of the most hardest working men in Hip-Hop. The Jacka is ready for nationwide fame, major label success, and will not stop until he brings the Bay Area back to the mainstream of rap music.

Law and Ethics Exercise

Scenario #1

If presented with this situation I would read the documents. If the documents proved the woman's involvement in illegal activities, I feel the the public should be notified of this. I would discuss the situation with my editor and push for the information to be released to the public. I would not take the documents, but I would make sure to take down extensive notes and perhaps some photos with my camera.

Situations like this can break huge leaks and be the ground breaking story needed to jump start a reporter's career. Many of America's great scandals such as Watergate, have been reported through leaks such as this. Therefore I would definitely break this story.

Scenario #2

I would not take a job at a local nursing home in order to break a story for my paper. I feel it is ethically wrong to disguise oneself in order to gain access to information. Although some media outlets do partake in disguising in investigative journalism, it is still a misrepresentation of ones self. It is not apart of my job to lie, misrepresent, and deceive people.

Scenario #3

You may not use quotes as your own, even if you heard them yourself. Journalists are always required to site their sources. The proper way to use the quotes would be to obtain them directly from the source and cite the sources. Otherwise, you may lose credibility as a journalism by stealing quotes.

Play Editor

The story presented contains no solid proof that the professor sexually harassed the student and compromises the principles of ethics within journalism. Reporting the truth with accurate information is very important to a journalist credibility. Libel lawsuits can be filed against reporters if inaccurate information is distributed. I would completely dismiss the story from publication in order to avoid slander and libel liability.

Topical Blog Post #4

Kobe Bryant has recently released his brand new sneaker, the Kobe IV. This latest signature shoe from Nike, is a low top shoe. Low top shoes are unheard of in the basketball sneaker world, therefore Kobe is trying to be a trend setter.

I am a big fan of sneakers and spend loads of cash on shoes. While looking at my empty wallet and the brand new Kobe sneakers, I questioned my spending on materialistic things. I wondered a little about how many children had to make those shoes.

Indonesian labor advocates have accused Nike of employing Indonesian children under 16-years-old to produce their sneakers, paying them less than 2 dollars per day. Even Michael Jordan's sneakers were involved in a child labor scandal.

I am not going to stop buying sneakers from Nike, but I feel we must take time to remember where the shoes come from. As Americans we should understand how much money we spend on materialistic things and be thankful for the opportunities we have at home.

Focus Story Structure

Running routes, making tackles, and winning the game are concerns of high school football players. This was no different for 17-year-old Pete Stenhoff of Chula Vista High School. Today, it is game over for the young football player as he struggles to win a diploma and survive the game of life.

"I knew the risks involved when I decided to play football" says Stenhoff, "I wish I would have known how bad it could be." he added.

Stenhoff was seriously injured in his junior year when he rammed head on into another football players chest, cracking his vertebrae in his spine. Now confined to a wheelchair for life, he has missed the chance to graduate with his class and has to take correspondence courses in order to receive his diploma.

High school football is a dangerous activity for young students. 20,000 injuries occur within the sport each year, 12 percent of them disabling the victims. Thirteen high school players died last year and thirty-five percent of injuries were to the neck or head. Critics blame the helmets.

Stenhoff is not blaming anyone for his injuries and is not bitter. The young man will continue his fight to finish his schooling and to live a normal life.
